Boo
One Saturday night in October
2009, our shelter doorbell rang. Standing outside were two men, one holding a box. Inside the box, nestled into a sweatshirt, was a tiny kitten.
The men told us they had been driving in separate cars when they saw a third motorist hit the kitten. That driver did not stop, but both of them did. The kitten was limping badly, so they were able to catch her and bring her to STAF.
Our shelter was crowded, but this little one desperately needed our help. We had to take her in.
The kitten lay quietly, looking up at us with bright, round eyes. We offered food. She hissed in fear, but much to our relief, she quickly began to eat. However, we noticed that she was bleeding and feared that she might have internal injuries. A volunteer rushed her to the animal hospital, and one of our shelter managers met her there.
Our veterinarian diagnosed a broken pelvis, broken ankle and trauma to the lower spine.
Since she arrived unexpectedly, just in time for Halloween, we named the kitten “Boo.”
Boo is now recuperating at the home of a volunteer. It’s too early to tell whether she will be able to walk normally. Her tail doesn’t work properly and may have to be amputated. However, she can use the litter box on her own. Best of all, her initial fear is gone. She still jumps at sudden movements, but when we quietly cuddle her, her “motor” starts right up. We’ll place Boo in a loving home if we can, but till then, she will always have a home at STAF.
Our "Rescue Fund" allows us to provide the veterinary care and medicine for Boo and others like her who we rescue every day. Won't you help? Please donate to our rescue fund today.

George C
George C is an absolutely adorable Chocolate Lab/Chesapeake Bay mix who had survived years of neglect in his former home before coming to STAF. But in true dog fashion he has emerged with his sweet personality intact. George is hard of hearing from years of ear infections that have damaged his ear canal, but not completely deaf. When he came to us he was almost totally bald and had been living in a garage until his owner’s new dog attacked him and they decided to get rid of George. His name was not George in his previous home, we changed it when he came to STAF. We told him that we were going to name him after someone handsome – his official name is George Clooney.
We see the resemblance – don’t you?
We soon discovered he has food allergies, and now, after weekly baths and a very strict diet some of his fur has grown back in. But he still isn’t 100%. He’s more like 75%. Our vet feels that he is allergic to something even though dozens of tests have come back negative. He has constant ear infections that no amount of medicine has cleared up, which is why we think he has underlying allergies. Although young at heart, George’s age has started to catch up with him. He takes Prednisone to help with a faulty bladder, daily ear medication, and almost daily baths to help with his itchy skin. He is also showing signs of dementia. A very dedicated volunteer has started taking George to a holistic vet.
George quietly watches the world go by. He is curious, likes to play with towels and soft toys and adores a good game of tug-of-war. He doesn’t have an aggressive fiber in him. He loves to go for walks, or just hanging out, watching what all the other dogs are doing. Senior dogs are often over looked when it comes time to adopt, but we here at STAF will care for them no matter what it takes. Your donation not only will help George, but also other senior dogs and cats at STAF.
